Earlier this year we had our national election and emotion was at fever pitch. I saw friend pitted against friend. The toxicity, anger and messages of division were, at times, almost impossible to believe.

I’ll be honest, at first I was angry about how it was all going down. The shouting was so loud that no one could be heard. Now, I’m just sad that a country full of larrikins and down-to-earth Aussies has become so caught up with barking at each other.

So this week I want to share the lyrics of one of the great Aussie songs. And to make a request…

Every one of us is a great chief trying to be our very best selves. Now is the time to reach out to someone who has a different belief to you and have a coffee or a beer. Break bread.

The truth is, we are one of the greatest countries with over 20M ripping people and likely one of the most multicultural and accepting countries on the planet. We need to show the world again that we are just that.

Let’s reject the tribalism and, for at least a while, be mates.

Here’s an excerpt from that great song..:

I came from the dream-time
From the dusty red-soil plains
I am the ancient heart
The keeper of the flame
I stood upon the rocky shores
I watched the tall ships come
For forty thousand years I’ve been
The first Australian

I came upon the prison ship
Bowed down by iron chains
I bought the land, endured the lash
And waited for the rains
I’m a settler, I’m a farmer’s wife
On a dry and barren run
A convict, then a free man
I became Australian

I’m the daughter of a digger
Who sought the mother lode
The girl became a woman
On the long and dusty road
I’m a child of the Depression
I saw the good times come
I’m a bushie, I’m a battler
I am Australian

We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We’ll share a dream and sing with one voice
“I am, you are, we are Australian”
Songwriters: Bruce Woodley / Dobe Newton
